Among five species of otters occurring in Asia, the hairy nosed otters(Lutra sumatrana) are known to be the most rare species and categorized as insufficiently known(IUCN, 1988) where scientific investigation are urgently needed to evaluate their present status.
The hairy nosed otter is the endemic species of Southeast Asia. It used to distribute in Southern Indochina and Thailand through to Malaysia and Indonesia. In Thailand, it is endangered according to the finding of the Institute of Science and Technology of Thailan(1991).

In 1994, a skull of a road killed otter in Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia was identified to be the hairy nosed otter(Sebastian, 1994). It was found near a peat swamp forest and was the first record of the animal after many years.

However, the biodiversity study in the remain peat swamp forest in Southern Thailand found otter' sign that was suspected to be the hairy nosed otters. That was the first rediscovery of the hairy nosed otter in the world. This discovery could confirm the status of this species after it was once considered be a race of Lutra(Foster-Turley et al., 1990).
After the finding of this rarest otter species in "Phru Toa Daeng" Peat Swamp forest in "Narathiwat" province, Thailand. The project was conducted in 1999 to 2000 by Ms. Budsabong Kanchanasaka to study its distribution in the swamp forest in order to find out its habitat. Their scats were collected to study food habit. Tracks and scats were also examined to find out the difference with other Asian otters.

In this year another project about the Telemetric study of the hairy nosed otter will start to find out more information about the habitat selection and other ecological needs. Although the telemetric study is costly but we hope that the output of the study will provide more knowledge of this otter species that will be useful for the conservation strategy of the rare otter species in the future.
